Lord Surya, the Sun, moves to the north during Uttarayan, and the Sun moves into the Makar Rashi, or Capricorn. Uttarayan 2023 falls on January 14 in Gujarati calendars. The holiday is also called Makar Sankranti or Sankranti. South India calls the time when the Sun moves from the south to the north “Uttarayana Punyakalam.” This is a six-month period that is thought to be the Devas’ daytime.
Surya Sankranti, which is when the sun moves into Makar, or Capricorn, is seen as a very lucky and good event. Saint Jaimini says that the 12 hours and 46 minutes that come before and after Sankranti are holy. During this time, people think that giving money to the poor and helping them would bring them honor.

When Uttarayana 2023 begins and ends?
On January 15, 2023, Makar Sankranti will be held. Punyakaal, the time for puja and holy baths, will start at 7:15 a.m. on January 15, 2023. Makar Sankranti is the day when the sun moves into the zodiac sign of Capricorn, also known as Makara. It is also called Uttarayana Punyakalam, and it marks the beginning of spring.
Moksha is said to be at the end of the northern path. Surya, or the Sun God, is worshipped on Uttarayan, which is mostly a day for honoring nature. Cows, oxen, and other domesticated animals are also given baths. They are also given tasty treats and fresh grass. Because people’s lives depend on animals and plants that have been tamed, special pujas are done for their health.
The Legends of Uttarakhand:
- Lord Krishna says in the Bhagwad Geeta that Uttarayan is the most fortunate and brightest six-month period. If a person dies during this time, he will be reborn and reach moksha.
- During the time of the Mahabharat, Bhishma Pitamah was given the right to die. His soul likewise left his body on Makar Sankranti.
- On this lucky day, Goddess Ganga came to Earth to bless Bhagirath’s family tree. Because of this, it is considered holy to bathe in the Ganga on Uttarayan.
