Kanipakam Vinayaka Temple was built in the early 11th century by Chola monarch Kulothunga Chola I and afterward extended by the Emperors of the Vijayanagara dynasty in 1336. The idol at Kanipakam Vinayaka Temple is still expanding in size! We can now see the idol’s knees and belly. An enthusiastic devotee presented Lord Ganesh with a silver ‘Kavacham’ (armor) fifty years ago, but it is now out of size and does not suit the idol.

History Of the Temple – Sthala Purana Kanipakam Vinayaka Temple

Once upon a time, three farmers were born with physical abnormalities and were dumb, deaf, and blind. They had a plot of property. Water was formerly taken from the well using the Piccota technique. The other two used to ply on the piccata while one irrigated the land via the canals. During one such operation, they discovered that the water in the well had dried up and they could no longer get water from it.

One of them climbed into the well and began digging. He was surprised to see the iron instrument collide with a stone-like structure. The farmer was surprised afterward to find the blood flowing from it. Within seconds, the whole water in the well became blood crimson. As a result of this holy encounter, all three became normal and lost their defects.

When the locals learned of the miracle, they flocked to the well, attempting to deepen it even further. But their efforts were useless since Lord Vinayaka’s ‘Swayambhu’ idol (self-manifestation) emerged from the well’s churning waters.

Coconuts were presented after this miracle, and the tirtham from the coconuts blanketed the whole region. This resulted in a change in the pronunciation of the term ‘Kaniparakam,’ which was subsequently pronounced as ‘Kanipakam.’

Even now, the idol remains in the original well, and the well’s waters are perpetual and immortal. Even now, during the rainy season, the holy water from the well overflows. Tirtham is the holy water from the well that is donated to believers (Holy water).

From August 31 to September 20, 2022, Kanipakam Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka Temple will host the annual Brahmotsavam in magnificent style. The temple administration has been making every effort to ensure that the annual celebration is a huge success.
