Every fortnight Pournima and Amavasya occur, and each has a different significance. Ashada Bhahula Amavasya named “Bheemana Amavasya” is one such festival that is celebrated on new moon day in the month of Ashada as per the Telugu Calendar. In Hinduism basically, no ceremonies or festivals are performed in the month of Ashada, but on the last day Bheemana Amavasya will be celebrated as a festival and it is an Inaugural festival to Sravana masa also. It will also be called “Jyothirbheemeswara Vratham”. Bheeman Amavasya Vrata or Jyothirbheemeswara Vratha is a festival that is dedicated to women, and this is widely celebrated in parts of Karnataka & Andra Pradesh. Who can do Jyothirbheemeswara Vratha or Bheemana Amavasya Vratha?

This can be worshipped by both married and unmarried women. As per the puranic story, women celebrate this festival for well being of their husbands and brother. Married women perform this ritual for Dheerga Soumangalyam i.e longevity of their husband’s wellness and unmarried woman for getting a virtuous groom.

Pooja vidhanam of Sri Jyothirbheemeswara Vratha

At first, the main lamps were cleaned using turmeric and sandalwood. A turmeric root is tied to one of the lamps using sacred yellow thread. These lamps were placed on the pedestal where rice is spread and decorated with flowers. Take a yellow thread and tie nine knots in it along with flowers, and these threads should be placed along with beetle leaves and should keep in front of lamps. After completing the pooja ritual threads should be tied to the hands.
