Vinayaka chavithi is generally celebrated for 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 days. After that nimarjanam of Vinayaka idol will be done. Lord Ganesha is also called Vighnaganapati which means the one who removes obstacles, and hence Lord Vinayaka is worshipped before starting a new work or marriage or House warming functions. As per Puranas, Goddess Parvathi Devi made a mud sculpture of a boy and gave life to it. She makes him a guard when she goes to bathe and tells him to not let anyone in. When Parvathi Devi was in the bath, Lord Siva arrives at Kailasa giri, but the child who was prepared by Goddess Parvathi stopped him. Enraged by this Lord Siva beheads him. Later realizing that the boy is his son, Siva makes him alive by attaching the head of an elephant Gajasura and makes Ganesha the lord of all Ganas. 

Once Lord Chandra laughs at Lord Vinayaka and gets cursed by Parvathi Devi that one who sees him on Vinayaka Chavithi will Mithya Dosham which means a false accusation of stealing something. According to Panchangams, one must not look at the sky between 9:12 AM to 8:53 PM.

• Wake up early in the morning and have a head bath and wear clean clothes.
• Decorate the house with mango leaf thoranams and flowers.
• Take a clean stool and apply turmeric paste to it. Now keep the Vinayaka idol made up of mud on the stool such that, the idol faces East.
• Decorate the sides of the idol with Corn and sugarcane sticks on either side. Darba grass is a must for Pooja.
• For naivedhyam kudumulu, daddojanam is a must, as they are lord Vinayaka’s favorite items.
• Keep books in front of the idol for blessings.
• Give harathi to the god and finish Pooja.
• Distribute prasadam to devotees after Pooja.
• Do nimarjanam of the idol on 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 days. Or you can place the idol at a larger idol where poojas are conducted for more days.
