2023 Nag Panchami Date Timings Pooja Tithi Muhurth Celebrations and story:

Nag People fast on the fifth day of the bright half of the month of Shravan. This day is called Panchami Vrat. Garuda Purana says that pictures of “Nag” should be made on both sides of the front door and honoured. This is also called ‘Bhitti Chitre Nag Puja’. Brahmins are given food, laddoos, and kheer, which is a dish made with rice, milk, and sugar. Snakes and people who “charm” snakes also get food like this.

A farmer lived in a village and had two sons and one daughter. When the peasant was working his field one day, the plough ran over and killed three baby snakes. When the mother snake saw that her kids had died, she felt sad and chose to get back at the farmer. When the peasant and his family were sleeping in the middle of the night, the mother serpent came into their house and bit the peasant, his wife, and two of his boys. Because of this, everyone except the girl died.

The next morning, the mother serpent went back into the house to kill the peasant’s daughter. She was very smart, so to make up with her, the mother snake gave her a bowl of milk and asked her, with her hands folded, to forgive her father for killing her boys. She was happy to see the snake, and she asked it to forgive her parents. Mother Snake was very happy about this, so she brought back to life the peasant, his wife, and his two boys, who she had killed the night before by biting them. Also, the mother snakes gave gifts and promised that women who worshipped a snake on Shravan Shukla Panchami would be safe for seven generations.
