The celebration is based on the historic fight between Durga and the demon Mahishasura, waged to demonstrate that good triumphed over evil. These nine days are dedicated to Durga and her nine manifestations, or “avatars,” known as “Navadurga.” Each day, the goddess takes a different form:

The Kanakadurga temple in Vijayawada offers a stunning Durga Navratri event. Dasara is an annual celebration that lasts nine days and is emphasized by a variety of rites known as Alankaranas. This year, the nine-day Navaratri celebration known as Dasara Sharan Utsavalu will begin on September 26 (Aswayuja Suddha Padyami) and end on October 5 (Aswayuja Suddha Padyami) (Aswayuja Suddha Dasami, also known as Vijaya Dasami).

Dasara Navaratri in Andhra Pradesh 2022

Andhra Pradesh residents refer to Dasara, Dashain, or Dussehra Navaratri as Devi Navaratrulu or Sharad Navaratrulu. The nine days (or rather, nine nights) of the Dussehra festival are celebrated in grand form in Ammavaru temples around the state, particularly the Vijayawada Kanakadurga Temple.

Durgamma is venerated under different titles throughout this 9-day event and is dressed in several “Alankaram” avatars. The Sharad Navaratri Utsavalu begins with the Kalasha Sthapana Pooja.

Nine goddesses are worshipped throughout the course of nine days during the ceremonies. The stage has been decked, the legend has been told, the story has been acted out, and the Hindu texts have been chanted. During the harvest season, the nine days are also a major cultural festival. There are competitions to design and build pandals, family vacations to these pandals, and public celebrations of Hindu classical and folk dances, for example. Hindu devotees frequently fast during Navaratri. On the last day, known as Vijayadashami, the sculptures are either thrown into a river or the ocean, or the statue representing evil is set ablaze with fireworks to demonstrate that evil has been defeated. People also prepare for Diwali, which falls twenty days following Vijayadashami and is known as the “festival of lights.”
