Dev Diwali is celebrated on the banks of the Ganges River in Varanasi. This marks the end of both the Tulsi Vivah ritual and the Diwali celebrations. Dev Deepawali is religiously significant because it is believed that Gods and Goddesses descend on this day to take a sacred bath in the Ganges. The entire ghat of the sacred river is decked with millions of tiny earthen lamps for the sake of the Gods and Goddesses as well as the River Ganges (diyas). This custom of lighting clay lights began in 1985 at the Panchganga Ghat.

Dev Diwali Varanasi 2022 Date and Pooja Timings in India Muhurt

• It is celebrated on the last day of Ganga Mahotsav, which begins on Prabodhini Ekadashi (the eleventh day of the Kartik lunar month) and ends on Dev Deepawali, which this year occurs on November 7.
• Dev Deepawali, not to be confused with Deepawali (or Diwali), is an annual celebration celebrated in Varanasi on the occasion of Kartik Poornima. This is 15 days after Diwali.
• In addition to its religious significance, this day has a nationalistic significance. On this day, all of the brave troops who gave their lives defending India are recognized and honored. Wreaths are handed as an homage to the martyrs in Varanasi. This event has been meticulously arranged by Ganga Seva Nidhi. After patriotic songs are sung, the celebration concludes with the last post by three Indian Armed Forces.

Varanasi Dev Deepawali Celebrations:

Varanasi’s complex Dev Deepawali ritual follows a strict annual calendar of events. The ceremony begins with Ganesh Vandana or the giving of prayers and flowers to Lord Ganesh. Following that, 41 young girls and 21 Brahmins offer lit earthen lamps known as diyas or Deepa dan in the background while Vedic mantras are chanted. Many people wash in the Ganges on this auspicious day, known as Kartik Snan. This practice is said to purify one of their sins. Many houses also observe Bhoj, a meal-giving event followed by Akhand Ramayan (chanting of the Ramayana).

Dev Deepawali is a spectacle to behold in Varanasi. Every ghat and shrine in the Holy City has earthen ghee diyas lit up. It’s tough to say whether the stars have arrived on Earth. It is said that the Gods travel to Varanasi on this auspicious day to bathe in the Ganga. This is why people enjoy this celebration so much. Travelers from all across the country flock to Varanasi during this historic event. On the night of the main event, thousands of villagers and guests assemble along the river ghats to witness the stunning and elaborate aarti, with thousands of lit diyas distributed around. Despite a large number of people, the scenery is breathtaking.
