History of Sri Krishna Janmashtami:

Lord Krishna was born at Mathura during the month of Bhadrapada. He was the son of Devaki and Vasudeva. Mathura was controlled by Lord Krishna’s uncle Kansa when he was born. Kansa wished to murder his sister’s children because a prophecy said that the couple’s eighth son would bring Kansa down. Kansa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and murdered their first six children shortly after hearing the prophesy.

Devaki’s seventh fetus was moved from Devaki’s womb to Princess Rohini’s. When their eighth child, Lord Krishna, was born, the whole palace fell asleep, and Vasudeva rescued the infant and took him to Nand Baba and Yashodha’s abode in Vrindavan. Vasudeva returned to the palace with a newborn girl and delivered her to Kansa after the transaction. When the wicked monarch attempted to murder her, she changed into Goddess Durga and warned him of his coming destiny. Krishna later kills his uncle Kansa for his bad deeds.
