Being devout followers of Shiva, Ravana’s mother performed rituals of devotion at the Shiva Linga in order to ensure the success of their kingdom. Lord Indra, who was envious of her devotion to Shiva, absconded with the statue and hurled it into the water. When Ravana’s mother’s adoration was suddenly disrupted, she expressed her displeasure to her son. Ravana made a commitment to her mother that he would retrieve the Atma Linga.
He worshipped Lord Shiva in the Himalayas, and finally, he severed his own head as an offering to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was moved by his devotion, and as a reward, he bestowed upon him the aathma linga. However, there was one condition: the aathama linga must never be set down from its position in the hands; otherwise, it will become firmly rooted in that location.
Ravana agreed to this condition and moved. Later that day, when it was time for him to perform his rituals, he asked a cowboy to hold the aathama linga and not to place it on the ground until he returned from his bath. The cowboy agreed to do so, but he said he would place the linga on the ground if Ravana did not return after three calls to his name. Ravana accepted this condition and moved. Ravana was fooled by Lord Ganesh while he was in the form of a cowboy. The cowboy called Ravana three times, but Ravana was unable to return each time.
As a result, the cowboy kept the Atmalinga on the ground. When Ravana attempted to lift the aathama linga, it struck him and grew to be enormous. Ravana gave it the name “Mahabaleshwar.” Ravana followed the lad and his cows when suddenly all of them vanished except for one cow. So he chased the cow and grabbed it by the ear. Except for the ear, the rest of the cow fell to the ground.
