What is the Vyasaraja Mutt Panchangam?
A panchangam (literally “five limbs”) is the Hindu almanac that records the five core elements of each day: tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (lunar mansion), yoga and karana. The Vyasaraja Mutt Panchangam is the version compiled and published by Sri Vyasaraja Matha, one of the senior monasteries of the Madhwa tradition.
Sri Vyasaraja Matha follows Dvaita Vedanta, the philosophy taught by Sri Madhvacharya. The matha is based at Sosale in Karnataka and takes its name from Sri Vyasatirtha (Vyasaraja), a celebrated saint and scholar of the lineage. Together with Uttaradi Matha and Raghavendra Matha, it is counted among the three principal apostolic institutions of Dvaita Vedanta, sometimes referred to collectively as the Mathatraya. Because the almanac comes from this tradition, the festival and observance dates it lists reflect Madhwa custom, which can differ in detail from other regional panchangas.
What the panchangam contains
A yearly edition is built around the Hindu lunar calendar and typically covers:
- Daily panchanga elements — tithi, weekday, nakshatra, yoga and karana for each day of the year.
- Festival and vrata dates — major Madhwa and pan-Hindu observances, with the dates the matha recognises.
- Ekadashi days — the fasting days that hold particular importance in the Madhwa tradition, with their names.
- Aradhana dates — the commemoration days of the saints and gurus of the lineage, which are central to Madhwa devotional life.
- Auspicious timings — material relevant to choosing dates for samskaras and religious functions.
Each edition is named after the samvatsara it covers, following the sixty-year Hindu cycle of year names. Shobhakruth was the samvatsara for the 2023–24 period; later years carry their own names, such as Vishwavasu and Parabhava. Because the calendar advances every year, an old Shobhakruth edition is useful as a historical reference but should not be used to plan current observances — you need the edition for the present samvatsara.
How to get the current edition (honest note)
We want to be clear: this is an information guide, and we do not host, sell or provide a download link for any Vyasaraja Mutt Panchangam PDF. The almanac is the matha’s own publication, and copying or redistributing it is not something we do. Instead, here is how to obtain an authentic copy:
- Official Sri Vyasaraja Matha website — the matha publishes its panchanga online and states that this is the only official and authentic version. It also cautions devotees against unofficial copies that may carry errors.
- The Sosale Vyasaraja Matha app — available on the App Store and Google Play, it provides daily panchanga details and event updates in multiple languages.
- Authorised sellers and the matha’s outlets — printed editions are sold through the matha and recognised Madhwa booksellers each year.
Sourcing the panchangam directly from the matha matters for accuracy. Religious dates depend on precise astronomical calculation, and the matha itself warns that unofficial versions can contain discrepancies. For something used to decide fasting and festival days, the authentic edition is the only reliable choice.
How the panchangam is used
Within Madhwa households, the panchangam is a day-to-day reference. Families check it to confirm Ekadashi fasting days, to know when the Aradhana of a particular saint falls, and to identify major festivals. Priests and elders consult it when fixing dates for samskaras such as upanayana and weddings, and for arranging pujas on suitable tithis. Because the matha’s panchanga reflects its own siddhanta, following a single authoritative edition keeps a family’s observances consistent with the wider Madhwa community for that year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download the Vyasaraja Mutt Panchangam PDF here?
No. We are an information guide and do not host or distribute the panchangam. It is the matha’s own copyrighted publication. You can obtain it through the official Sri Vyasaraja Matha website, the Sosale Vyasaraja Matha mobile app, or authorised sellers.
Is the Shobhakruth 2023-24 edition still usable?
The Shobhakruth edition covered the 2023-24 samvatsara only. It is fine as a historical record, but it will not give correct dates for the current year. For present observances you need the edition for the running samvatsara, obtained from the matha.
Is the panchangam available in Kannada?
Yes. According to the matha’s official site, the panchanga is published in several languages including Kannada, alongside Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English. The Kannada edition is widely used by devotees in Karnataka.
What makes the Vyasaraja Mutt Panchangam different from other almanacs?
It is published by a Madhwa (Dvaita Vedanta) institution and reflects that tradition’s calculations and observances, including the Aradhana days of its lineage of saints. Festival and Ekadashi dates can therefore differ in detail from other regional or sectarian panchangas.
