Durga Puja is a religious holiday in Bengal, but it is also a very emotional and hopeful time. Craftspeople, designers, “Kumar,” and people who sell things in grocery stores, the textile industry, the food industry, and other places look forward to this time of year because it gives them a chance to grow their businesses and make a little more money than in other months. Durga Puja means coming home, having a holiday, having fun, eating good food, getting dressed up, taking pictures to put on Instagram, going from one pandal to another with friends, and so much more. So, the Kolkata Durga Puja is an important and emotional event for all Bongs.

In 1610, when Kolkata was still called “Calcutta,” the first Durga Puja was held. A few landlords started the puja, and Sabarna Roychowdhury was in charge of making it happen. Durga Puja was held in Behala, which is south of Calcutta, as well as in some areas of Hooghly, Bardhaman, and Nadia.

The streets, alleys, markets, and each coroner get so busy during Durga Puja that you can’t visit Kolkata’s famous pandals without a map or a guide.
