Legend states that after defeating Tharaka Asura and Shurapadmasura in battle and driving their supporters away, Lord Subramanya Swamy, together with Ganesh and other deities, made their way to Kumara parvatha (Kumara Hills). Lord Shanmukha was greeted by Indra and the other devatas. When Indra realized how happy he was, he asked Lord Muruga to marry his daughter Devasena.

In little time at all, Lord Kumara Swamy gave his consent for Indra’s daughter to wed him. On Margashira shudha Shashti, which is located in Kumara parvatha, Lord Muruga and Devasena had their holy wedding ceremony. Lord Shiva, Brahmadeva, Sri Vishnu, and Rudra, along with a great number of other deities, congregate for the marriage and crowning ritual of Subramanya Swamy.

During the marriage, waters from a great number of holy rivers were brought. These waters of Mahabhisheka’s fall eventually formed a river, which became famous under the name Kumaradhara in later years.

It is stated that Lord Kumaraswamy and Lord Ganesha, who is Lord Kumaraswamy’s brother, slew the demon kings Tharaka and Shura Padmasurya in Kumara Parvatha, which is located close to Kukke Subramanya. Following his victory, Lord Kumaraswamy wed the daughter of Indra, who was known as Devasena. The location was endowed with divine powers as a result of the attendance of all major gods at the wedding festivities.
