Mahalaya Pitru paksha is one of the most sacred times to pray Pitru devatas. Those 16 days are dedicated to our ancestors who passed away. Doing Pitru Karya, Tarpana, Shraddha, and Daana will give Akshaya Phala to Pitru Devatha. Doing Bharani Shraddha also gave Ashwa Medha Yagna Result (Phala).

Among all 16 days, Bharani Shraddha is very Important. It must be done on Aparanna Kaala of Bharani Nakshatra. This Means Bharani Nakshatra must be on Pitru Paksha at Afternoon Times. Mostly Maha Bharani Shraddha comes on on Chaturthi Tithi or Panchami Tithi during Mahalaya Paksha. Means the 4th or 5th day in Mahalaya Paksha.
This Maha Bharani Shraddha is also Popularly known as Chauth Bharani Shraddha or Bharani Panchami Shraddha. The most important and significant for this Maha Bharani Shraddha is that it was maintained or ruled by Lord Yama. Doing Shraddha on Maha Bharani Shraddha gives the result equal to as similar as doing Bharani Shraddha are equivalent to those of Gaya Shraddha. The Procedure of doing this Maha Bharani Shraddha is clearly explained in the holy grantha Dharmasindhu and Nirnaya Sindhu.
In Mahalaya Paksha, standing inside in front of your main gate in the morning with folded hands, remembering your paternal deities, and saluting them, I am incapable of observing paternal paksha. Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapada month is as special for Deity Pujas as Mani Paksha is for Pitru Devata Pujas. It is called Pitrupaksha and Mahalaya Paksha as it is the favorite side of the father gods. Tarpana and Shraddha duties should be performed to the ancestral deities every day till the end of this Paksha. In Kudarani Paksha, they should perform Shraddha on the same Tithi Nadu in which their ancestors died.
