Mahalaya Amavasya also known as Pitru Amavasya or Sarvapitri Amavasya is a Hindu tradition devoted to ancestors. As per Hindu Calendar, Mahalaya falls on the last day of PitruPaksha or on Amavasya (new moon day) in the month of Bhadrapada. It is also observed on the last day of Krishna paksha, on Amavasya.
Mahalaya is considered the beginning of the 10-day festival of Durga Puja which is conducted annually in West Bengal. Mahalaya also reminds the Power of good over evil. Goddess Durga is said to have attained the powers of all gods in the universe to destroy the demon, Mahishasura. In the state of Telangana, Mahalaya Amavasya is celebrated as the beginning of the Bathukamma Festival.

- People of west Bengal consider Mahalaya Amavasya as a holy day of welcoming Goddess Durga to their home so people wake up early before sunrise and make all necessary preparations on this day.
- Family members of the deceased perform a ritual called Tarpan after taking a dip or a bath in the Holy River Ganga or any other holy river to the ancestors.
- The Bengalis listen to Mahishasuramardini songs as one of the Durga Puja Rituals.
