Shivratri: A Brief History

There are many stories and legends in the Puranas that explain how the festival got started. One story says that the poisonous pot came out of the water during the Samudra Manthan. All the Gods and Demons were scared of the poison because it could destroy the whole universe, so they all ran to Shiva to ask for help.

Shiva drank the poison, but instead of spitting it out, he kept it in his mouth to protect people from the bad effects. Because of this, his throat turned blue, so people started calling him Neelakantha the Blue-throated. Shivaratri is a holiday that celebrates the day when Shiva saved the world.

In another story from the Shiva Purana, Brahma and Vishnu, who are part of the other two groups of three Hindu gods, were arguing about who was the best of the two. The other gods were shocked by how hard the fight was, so they asked Shiva for help. Shiva took the form of a huge column of fire and put it between Brahma and Vishnu to show them that their fight was pointless.

The two were amazed by how tall and wide the column was, so they decided to find each other’s end and prove who was better. Brahma turned into a swan and flew up, while Vishnu, as Varaha, fell to the ground. But light has no limits, and they couldn’t find the final destination even after looking for miles and miles.

As Brahma went up, he came across a Ketaki flower that was slowly moving. When asked where she came from, the Ketaki said she was put at the top of the fiery column to make an offering. Brahma couldn’t find the highest threshold, so he gave up his search and gave the flower to the witnesses as proof.

Shiva’s anger let him show who he really was. He told Brahma that he was lying and cursed him for making sure that no one would ever be able to worship Shiva. Since Ketaki had lied in her testimony, it was also against the rules to worship with flowers from her garden.

Because Shiva first showed up in the form of a Linga on the 14th day of the dark part of the month Phalguna, this day is very important and is known as Mahashivaratri. People believe that if they worship Shiva on Mahashivaratri, they will have luck and happiness. Mahashivaratri is not just an event; it is also a way to understand the Hindu universe as a whole. This ritual is all about being stupid. Spreads the light of knowledge, helps people become aware of everything, ushers in spring after a dry and cold winter and calls on the power of God to see the creatures that God made.
