About Murudeshwar Temple
The Sri Murudeshwar temple stands on Kanduka Hill, a small headland surrounded on three sides by the Arabian Sea, in the town of Murudeshwar (also spelled Murdeshwar) in Bhatkal taluk, Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the most recognised coastal Shiva shrines in the state.
Two landmarks make the site famous. The first is the towering Shiva statue, about 123 feet (37 metres) tall, among the tallest statues of Shiva anywhere in the world. The second is the 20-storey Raja Gopura, a very tall temple gateway tower completed in 2008, with a lift that carries visitors up for a view of the giant idol. The statue and much of the modern development were financed by businessman and philanthropist R. N. Shetty, at a reported cost of around ₹5 crore. Today the temple complex draws pilgrims and visitors throughout the year.
Anna Prasada / Annadanam Timings
Annadanam — the offering of free food to devotees — is a long-standing tradition at many temples, and Murudeshwar serves anna prasada to visitors in its dining hall. The meal is vegetarian and is generally prepared in a simple, sattvic style. There is no charge to eat; the food is given freely to those who come.
Anna prasada is most commonly served around the midday period, with several sources noting it begins from about 12:30 PM and continues while supplies last. Serving may close once the day’s quantity is finished, and arrangements can vary on busy days, festivals and during special events.
Timings for anna prasada can change without notice — please confirm the current schedule with the temple before you visit.
How to Sponsor or Donate Officially
If you wish to support the free-meal service, you can do so as a voluntary contribution. Devotees commonly help annadanam in one of these ways:
- Make a cash donation toward annadanam at the temple office or designated counter.
- Offer provisions such as rice, vegetables, cooking oil or other kitchen supplies.
- Ask the temple office about sponsoring a meal on a special date, such as a birthday or anniversary, where such an arrangement is offered.
Because sponsorship amounts, receipt procedures and any seva-booking options are set by the temple and can change, the most reliable approach is to contact the temple office directly or visit in person. Always insist on an official receipt for any donation.
Sri Vyasa Pooja is an information guide — we do not collect donations or take payments. All contributions should go only through the temple’s own official channels.
Donation amounts and methods may differ from what is described here — confirm with the temple.
Darshan Timings
Entry for darshan at Murudeshwar is generally free. Published visiting windows commonly fall in two sessions — a morning session from the early hours until around midday, and an evening session from the afternoon until the temple closes at night. Reported timings vary slightly between sources, so treat the following as indicative only:
- Morning: approximately 6:00 AM to about 12:30 PM
- Evening: approximately 3:00 PM to about 8:30 PM
Special poojas, abhisheka and other sevas may be available for a fee and can have their own separate timings. Festival days often follow a different schedule.
Darshan and seva timings can change — confirm with the temple before planning your visit.
