It is claimed that Lord Shiva himself visited certain locations, and as a result, worshippers give Jyotirlingas a particular place in their hearts. Jyotirlingas are holy temples that are dedicated to Lord Shiva. Jyotirlinga is a Sanskrit word that translates to “column or pillar of light.” The’stambha’ sign is used to illustrate the idea that there is neither a beginning nor an end.

During a debate between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu regarding who was the most powerful deity, Lord Shiva took the form of a column of light and challenged both gods to determine where it ended. Neither one of them was successful. It is often thought that the jyotirlingas may be found at the locations where the columns of light have fallen to the ground.

It is reported that up to the 12th century, the ancient shrine resided inside a thatched hut for its entire existence. It is reported that Parakrama Bahu, from Sri Lanka, was the one who started the masonry work here. The remaining portions of the temple were constructed during the reign of the Setupathy dynasty at Ramanathapuram.

It is thought that the present building that houses the temple was constructed sometime in the 17th century AD. Many royal families from Travancore, Ramanathapuram, Mysore, and Pudukkottai have patronized the temple and contributed to the temple’s present splendor via their contributions.

The Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga got its name since it is believed that Lord Rama offered homage to Lord Shiva at this location. The temple has an area of 15 acres and is distinguished by its towering gopurams, which are in the shape of pyramids. It is considered to be the longest hallway in the world, and it consists of 4,000 carved granite pillars spread out across 4,000 feet. The fact that the granite is not native to the island makes the building an even more impressive feat of engineering.

On his trip back from Lanka, after he had vanquished the evil king Ravana, Lord Rama is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva at this location, according to local legend. Lord Rama, who was a Brahmin and a significant follower of Lord Shiva, prayed to him in order to make up for the sin of slaying Ravana, who was a Shiva devotee.

As there was no temple dedicated to Shiva there, he instructed Hanuman to go to Mount Kailash, where Lord Shiva resides, and bring back the linga from there.Nevertheless, Hanuman was unable to return in time to complete the puja at the auspicious hour that had been established, so Sita fashioned a linga out of the sand and called it the Ramalinga. Rama worshipped this linga.

As Hanuman got back, he found out that Rama had not waited for his linga, and this made him very unhappy. In order to appease him, Rama gave the devotees the instruction to worship the linga that Hanuman had brought with him, which Rama named the Vishwalinga, in front of the Ramalinga.
