Significance of Ekadashi Vratham
As per Padma Purana, in Satya yuga, there is a demon called Murdanava. He used to terrorize all humans and gods as well. So gods went to Lord Vishnu to protect them. So lord Vishnu immediately took off on his vehicle GARUDA. He fought for 1000 years with Murdanava and Murdhanava still is fighting with full power and energy. Lord Vishnu acted as if he was tired by the battle and went inside a cave in the Himalayas. Lord Vishnu was taking a rest in the cave. Check below for the Significance of Ekadashi Vratham
Murdanava came inside the cave following Lord Vishnu and saw Lord Vishnu sleeping. So he took out his sword to kill Lord Vishnu. Then an extremely beautiful woman with a sword came from Lord Vishnu’s body. Murnadhava fell for her beauty and asked her to marry him. The lady said she would marry him if he defeats her in the battle and Murnadava accepted it.

During that fight the lady killed Murnadava. Lord Vishnu woke up to the noise of the fight and saw the lady who killed Murnadhava. Lord Vishnu got pleased by the fight and offered her a wish. Then the lady said as I evolved from your Ekadasha indriya ( eleven senses of the body), I shall be called Ekadashi. I desire that everyone should observe Ekadashi Vratam and control their Ekadasha Indriya on this day.
In the spiritual context, Ekadashi signifies eleven senses consisting of five organs of action, 5 sensory organs, and the mind. Ekadashi vratam is done by keeping the 10 senses and the mind in control by consuming milk and fruits. Ekadashi cleanses both body and mind through fasting.
