Chaitra Masam Ugadi is the festival of New Year celebration as per the Telugu calendar. Chaitra Ugadi is also known as Yugadi, in Telugu States, this festival is celebrated as a Telugu New Year Day. This Ugadi is celebrated in different names in Indian states such as “Gudi Padwa” in Maharashtra and “Ugadi” in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. This event, known by different names in different places, marks the beginning of Vasanth Rutu (Spring Season). Ugadi heralds the start of a brand-new year during which nature is in full bloom, signifying renewal and honoring the season’s crispness.

Pooja Process of Ugadi day

On Ugadi Day, Pooja Process will be slightly different. On this day, Offering the Ugadi Pachidi is the main prasadam to Lord in the pooja and festival celebration. Doing the Head bath the day in the early morning and wearing a new dress, Visiting the temple to have the darshan of the Lord. Also doing the pooja of Kula devata (Family God) and offering the prasadam of Ugadi Pachadi is the main process. After offering the prasadam, complete family members should have the pachadi.

Why is Ugadi celebrated by the Telugu people?

It is celebrated on the first day of the Gregorian month of Chaitra, which corresponds to March or April in the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is widely accepted that on this day, Lord Brahma began to create the elements of the Earth.

Ugadi Panchangam Pooja and Panchanga Sravana

  • Ugadi is observed on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, per the Panchangam (the first day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month Chaitra).
  • The Pratipada Tithi must fall on the day’s sunrise.
  • The first day shall be honored if Pratipada is sighted at sunrise on two consecutive days.
  • The day will be taken into account if the Pratipada Tithi does not start a sunrise.
  • Adhik Maas disregards Ugadhi (an extra month added after every 32 months, 16 days, and 8 Ghatis). In Sanskrit, the day of Ugadi is known as Chaitra Shuddha Padyami.

It is made with fresh mangoes, neem blossoms, jaggery (panela), and tamarind (margosa). Bananas, coconut, and sugarcane are other options. The six flavors of the saul, known as shadhruchulu, are jaggery’s sweetness, tamarind’s sourness, neem flowers’ bitterness, the flavor of the green mango skin, the spiciness of the chili powder, the flavor of the raw, delicate mango, and salt.

Neem leaves and flowers are consumed during this time as a remedy for those with Kapha dosha, especially at the beginning of Vasantha Ruthu and throughout the spring (kapha dosha increases around this period)

The Neem blossoms, new tamarind, jaggery, and fresh raw mangoes in Ugadi Pachadi have nutrients that cleanse the system and serve as preventatives (prevention of illness or disease).

Telugu Ugadi Pachadi Recipe Ingredients And Preparation Process

  • 1 cup of unwashed, undried, and coarsely chopped raw, fresh mango with skin
  • 1 tablespoon margosa blossoms (neem tree flowers)
  • 1 cup of jaggery, grated
  • 1 tbsp. fresh coconut chunks, cut finely (optional)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons tamarind paste (according to your choice)
    salt as desired

Making of Ugadi Pachadi:

  • A Traditional Andhra Dish That Reflects the Many Flavors of Life Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl to resemble sauce.
  • Add very little water to the chutney if you prefer it thin and watery (2-3 tbsps). Along with the components listed above, you can also use small bits of sugarcane, ripe banana, and putanaala pappu (roasted channa dal).
