Thiruvallur Veeraraghava Swamy Temple also referred to as Veeraraghavaswamy Temple and is situated in Thiruvallur, Chennai Metropolitan City, the administrative center of the Tiruvallur district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The early medieval Tamil canon of the Alvar saints from the sixth to ninth century CE, the Divya Prabandham, glorifies the temple, which was built in the Dravidian architectural style. This Temple is one of the sacred temples of Lord Vishnu’s 108 Divya Desams. Both Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi are revered as Veeraraghava Perumal and Kanakavalli Thayar here.

The temple is thought to be extremely old and was probably built by the Pallavas in the late 8th century CE. Later contributions came from Thanjavur Nayaks at various points in time. Three Chola-era inscriptions may be seen in the temple. The temple is housed behind a granite wall and includes a seven-tiered raja gopuram. The complex houses every shrine, and to the west of the temple lies Hritayathabhanasini, the temple tank. The management of the temple maintains a goshala.

History of the Veeraraghava Perumal Temple:

• Salihotra, a sage, established his ashram here. For a living, he used to grind rice, giving half of the flour to the seekers and eating the rest himself. He had a strong devotion to Vishnu. Vishnu once visited him as a guest to test his devotion. He asked Salihotra to give him food, and the wise man complied.
• Lord Vishnu as a guest asked the sage to provide more food because he was hungry. The wise man offered the remaining half of the flour, which he then consumed himself. The sage immediately offered his hermitage when the visitor requested a place to rest. The visitor disclosed his true identity when he arrived at the hermitage and blessed the sage.
• According to a different myth, Vishnu showed up there to wed Lakshmi, who was the daughter of Dilipa, the king of Dharmasenapura. He suddenly appeared there and wed her. Thiruevvul and Veshranniem are other names for the spot.
