The “Lord Nataraja” or cosmic dance of Lord Shiva is celebrated during the Arudra darshan. In Lord Shiva temples, this festival is also celebrated with tremendous zeal. Thiruvathira is another name for Arudra Darshan. The Arudra Darshan ceremony shows Lord Shiva’s immense talents and powers. The festival is a significant reason to celebrate at the Shiva temple in the Tamil Nadu city of Chidambaram, which houses a shrine specifically for Lord Nataraj.
The Arudra Darshan festival is well-known for being celebrated with tremendous fervor in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. During the fortunate month of Maargazhi, the festival honoring the idol Lord Shiva is held specifically on Arudra or Thiruvaathirai nakshatram day. Arudra nakshatram coincidentally falls on full moon day or Pournami during the Maargazhi month, giving this festival extra significance.

Rituals During Arudra Festival:
The ancient Vedas are chanted in homage to Nataraj, who is thought to be another manifestation of Lord Shiva before the ritual celebrations begin. While Lord Shiva celebrates his birthday on Mahashivratri day in other regions of the country, devotees swarm together to celebrate Nataraja’s birthday.
Get up early on the day of Arudra Darshan and take a holy bath in a holy river or at home while chanting the names of holy rivers. The fast is broken the following morning with the help of other shiva worshippers after receiving another glimpse of the Lord.
