It is said to be the residence of Lord Rama, making it a holy site that draws in tens of thousands of worshippers from all over the world (The seventh incarnation of Sri Mahavishnu). The holy river Godavari flows around this hill site that is known as the famous temple Bhadrachalam. The term Bhadrachalam derives from the mountain Bhadragiri (Mountain of Bhadra-a boon child of Meru and Menaka). Ithihasas asserts that the significance of this shrine may be traced back to the time period known as the Ramayana.

This coherent hill place existed in “Dandakaranya” of the Ramayana period, and it was there that Rama, along with his consort Sita and brother Laxmana, had spent their vanavasa. Parnashaala, the location connected to the famous Golden Deer and the location from which Sita was kidnapped by Ravana, is also located in the vicinity of this temple site. The occurrence of this event was necessary in order to keep a promise that Bhagawan Mahavishnu had made to His Bhakta Bhadra.
