Dahan is a character in the Prahlad and the Demoness Holika mythology (who is the namesake of the festival, Holi is derived from the name Holika).

According to legend, the demon king Hiranyakashipu received five mystical protection abilities as payment for his penance, which he thought would combine to make him everlasting. He compelled his subjects to worship him as a deity since he was adamant about this notion. His son Prahlad, however, refrained from doing so and remained true to his devotion of the true god Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu often tried to kill his son out of retaliation, but Vishnu always stopped him.

Hiranyakashipu and his sister Holika came up with a plot to assassinate Prahlad during one of these efforts. Due to Holika’s malicious motives, she succeeded in tricking Prahlada into burning to death on a pyre(fire), but she was also burned and murdered on the full moon night.

It is only when the full moon is visible in the evening that Holika Dahan ceremonies begin. The lucky period (muhurta) on March 7 runs from 06:24 to 08:51 and lasts for two hours and twenty-seven minutes.

2023 Holi Festival Date and Time Pooja Timings India Calendar

• Holi celebrations in India typically last two days, and planning can begin weeks in advance. The Holika Dahan (the burning of the demon Holika on a pyre to commemorate the triumph of good over evil) and the color war are the primary attractions of the celebration.
• In India, Holi will be celebrated on March 8th, 2023. Holika Dahan occurs on March 7th (the night of the full moon). On March 7th, the muhurta for Holika Dahan (the lucky time) is from 06:24 to 08:51. The day of the color fights, March 8, sees the entire nation take to the streets to celebrate.

The Indian calendar defines the timing of Holi, which varies by year. The Gregorian Calendar is generally celebrated in March, though it can also happen in late February.

It is celebrated on the final full moon day, or Purnima, of the Hindu calendar month of Falgun (12th month). The “full moon lunar day” known as Holi Purnima tithi in 2023 lasts from 04:17 PM on March 6 to 06:09 PM on March 7.

Eight days before Holi, from February 28 until March 7, the Holashtak takes place. Big decisions like purchasing a home, getting hitched, or launching a business are regarded as unlucky.

Only seven states, including Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Manipur, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, do not observe a public holiday on this day. Due to the fact that Holi is not an official holiday in certain states, it is either not observed there at all or is observed differently.
