According to the traditions found in the Puranas, Lord Krishna was wrongly accused of stealing a valuable diamond by the name of Syamantaka. Sage Narada, upon seeing the tribulations that Lord Krishna was through, revealed that Lord Krishna had seen the moon on the day of Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi, which is the reason he is afflicted with Mithya Dosha. Sage Narada made this revelation after observing the plights that Lord Krishna was enduring.
Sage Narada went on to tell Lord Krishna that God Chandra had been cursed by Lord Ganesha, and that the curse said that anybody who glimpsed the moon on Shukla Chaturthi would have Mithya Dosha during the month of Bhadrapada. He or she would be dirty and dishonoured in the society. Sage Narada then told Lord Krishna that Lord Ganesha had placed the curse on God Chandra.
