Every year on Magha Shuddha Saptami, or Ratha Sapthami (the seventh day of the Magha month according to the Telugu calendar), there will be an Utsava an important annual event called Radhasapthami is conducted at the Tirumala Tirupati Balaji Temple.

Lord Venkateswara (Malayappaswamy) and his consorts are led in procession atop seven Vahanams, which is the most significant event of the day (vehicles). The date of Ratha Saptami in Tirumala in 2023 is January 28. TTD celebrates the occasion as Surya Jayanthi.

On that day, Lord Venkateswara is led in a procession through four mada streets while accompanied by His consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi.

In addition to Chakrasnanam, there are seven other vahanams:

  1. Surya Prabha Vahanam
  2. Chinna Sesha Vahanam,
  3. Garuda Vahanam,
  4. Hanumantha Vahanam,
  5. Kalpavriksha Vahanam,
  6. Sarva Bhoopala Vahanam,and
  7. Chandraprabha Vahanam.

The celebration is special because it allows worshippers to see Balaji from atop several Vahanas and receive his benediction. Lord Balaji only climbs on two Vahanas, even during the renowned Brahmotsavams (vehicles). However, on the day of Ratha Saptami, Lord Venkateswara, Sridevi, and Bhudevi’s processional deities bless worshippers from dawn until dusk on seven separate Vahanas.

India celebrates Ratha Saptami under several names. Essentially, it is a form of Lord Surya worship (the sun god). The ceremonies change depending on the locale.
