Makara Sankranthi Meaning

Sankranti is a festival honoring Lord Sun. It is also the name of a particular solar day in the Hindu calendar. On this fortunate day, the sun enters Capricorn or Makar, which signifies the end of winter and the start of longer days. This marks the start of the month of Magh. To compensate for the difference caused by the earth’s revolution around the sun, the day of Sankranti is delayed by one day every 80 years. The sun starts a northward trip, or Uttarayan voyage, on Makar Sankranti. Consequently, this celebration is also known as Uttarayan. On this day, farmers throughout the nation hope for a bountiful harvest.

Makar Sankranti 2023 Date and Time Uttarayan Muhurth

• Makara Sankranti Punya Kalam – 07:15 A.M. till 05:46 P.M.
• Makara Sankranti Maha Punya Kalam – 07:15 A.M. to 09:00 A.M.

The period of time between Makar Sankranti and 40 Ghatis (about 16 hours for Indian places, if 1 Ghati lasts 24 minutes) is seen as favorable for auspicious labor. Punya Kaal refers to this time period of forty Ghatis. During Punya Kaal, Sankranti activities such as having a bath, presenting Naivedhya (food offered to a deity), offering charity or Dakshina, completing Shraddha rituals, and breaking the fast or Parana should be performed. If Makar Sankranti occurs after sunset, Punya Kaal activities are postponed until the following morning’s sunrise. Therefore, all Punya Kaal activities must be carried out during the day.

The celebration commemorates the day the sun enters Makara Rashi or Capricorn. The celebration also signifies the end of winter and the start of a new harvest season. It has both religious and seasonal importance. On the Hindu calendar, it is one of the most auspicious days.

Sankranti is deemed a Deity. According to folklore, Sankranti killed the devil Sankarasur. The following day of Makar Sankrant is known as Karidin or Kinkrant.
