The Puri Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, is a Vaishnavite Pilgrimage destination. Here, Lord Vishnu is worshipped. It is a component of the sacred Char Dham Yatra.¬†Originally constructed in 1198 BCE, the Jagannath Temple is devoted to Lord Jagannath, who is believed to be an avatar of Lord Vishnu. Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the temple, which is enclosed by two walls and a 190-foot Shikhara topped by Vishnu’s disc-shaped Sudarshan Chakra. Lord Jagannath, the temple’s principal god, is represented as a black deity with huge white eyes, whose clothing is periodically changed.

The entrance to the temple also serves as the entryway for the famed Rath Yatra, the yearly chariot parade in which the statue of Lord Jagannath is carried through the streets accompanied by tens of thousands of followers. The temple also has statues of Subhadra, Lord Jagannath’s sister, and Balbhadra, his brother.

What is the Puri Jagannath temple’s significance?

The importance of the Puri Jagannath temple’s idol rests in its idol. Unlike most other idols in the nation, which are often constructed of stone or metal, Lord Jagannath’s idol is made of wood. It is widely believed that the goddess Mahalakshmi herself oversees the temple’s kitchen.¬†The Nabakalebara procedure is a ritual exclusive to the Puri Jagannath temple. A Neem tree is chosen, chopped, and used to create an identical reproduction of the original idols. Then, the ancient idols are buried under a location known as Koili Vaikuntha.
