Puri Jagannath temple is also called Jagannath Chardham thus being one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage centers that every Hindu must experience in their lifetime. Lord Jagannath who is considered a form of Lord Vishnu is worshiped here along with his brother Lord Balabhadra and his sister Goddess Subhadra Devi.
Queen Gundicha, the wife of King Indrdyumna is an avid devotee of the Lord and built a temple in their honor which is known as the Gundicha temple. The deities stay in gundicha temple during rath yatra. Gunchia Marjana is a cleaning ritual done by the devotees of Lord Jagannath just a day before the Rath Yatra.
On the fourth day of Rath Yatra, Hera Panchami is celebrated which usually falls on Sashti Tithi. On this auspicious day, Lord Jagannath’s consort, Goddess Lakshmi arrives at Gundicha temple in search of Lord Jagannath. After staying for eight days in Gundicha temple, Lord Jagannath leaves for the main temple which is known as Bahuda Yatra. During Bahuda Yatra, The lord makes a small stop at Mausima temple to visit Goddess Ardashini.
The Rath Yatra for the year 2023 will be observed on 20 June Tuesday.
