Rameshwaram: Its History, Myths, and Legends

Among Shiva’s many epithets, “Lord of Rama” (Rameswaram) is among the most common. The Hindu epic Ramayana states that Lord Ram, the seventh incarnation of Vishnu, came here to appeal to Shiva for forgiveness for whatever wrongdoing he may have done while fighting demon king Ravana in Sri Lanka to save his wife, Devi Sita.

According to the Puranas (Hindu scriptures), Lord Rama sought the counsel of sages on how to pray for forgiveness. In order to atone for the sin of Brahmahatya committed by slaying the Brahmin Ravana, Lord Rama, accompanied by his wife Devi Sita and brother Lord Lakshmana, followed the advice of the sages and placed and worshipped the lingam (an iconic emblem of Shiva) at this spot.

King Rama desired the biggest lingam possible to serve Lord Shiva, so he ordered Lord Hanuman to bring one down from the Himalayas. Sita reportedly constructed a smaller lingam while the larger one was being transported because of the delay. This smaller lingam is now housed inside the temple’s holiest of spaces.

Certain later versions of the Ramayana, such as the one written by Tulasidas, provide evidence for the aforementioned account, which is not included in the original Ramayana by Valmiki or the Tamil version of the Ramayana written by the Tamil poet Kambar (1180-1250 CE) (15th century). It is said that Lord Rama, aided by Hanuman and Vanar Sena, constructed a stone floating bridge called the Ramsetu Bridge 22 kilometers before the island of Rameswaram.

There was a continuation of the bridge from Dhanushkodi in Rameswaram to Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. Adhyatma Ramayana, a non-canonical Ramayana text, claims that Lord Rama set up the lingam before the Lanka bridge was built. Between Rameswaram and Mannar Island, off the northwest coast of Sri Lanka, lies a network of limestone shoals known as Ram Setu Bridge, or the bridge erected by Lord Rama.

Research into the geology of the area indicates that this bridge formerly connected the Indian subcontinent to Sri Lanka via land. The bridge is about 30 kilometers in length and spans the gap between the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. Several storms in the 15th century apparently deepened the canal, making the bridge impassable to foot traffic.

Temple documents suggest that until a hurricane destroyed it in 1480 CE, Rama’s Bridge stood entirely above the water line. The bridge and its origin narrative were first referenced in Valmiki’s Ramayana, an ancient Indian Sanskrit epic. In Hindu legend, King Rama crossed the ocean on a bridge constructed by the Vanara army to go to Lanka and save his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana.

This bridge is known as Rama’s Bridge or Rama Setu (In Sanskrit; Setu means bridge). Ramayana, Chapter 2, Verse 76: “Setubandhanam” describes the bridge Rama had built for him. Sethusamudram, which literally translates to “Sea of the Bridge,” is the name given to the body of water that separates India and Sri Lanka.
