When is Ratha Sapthami Celebrated?

According to HINDU CALENDAR, Ratha Sapthami is celebrated on SHUKLA PAKSHA’s, 7th day called SAPTHAMI in the month of MAGHA i.e., Magha Masam. As per Puranas, Lord Surya Naryana was born on the day of Magha Shudda Sapthami which is celebrated as Ratha Sapthami.

Date and Time of 2022 Ratha Saptami:

As like every year, Ratha Saptami falls in the mid-month of February or March. This year Ratha Saptami is going to be Celebrated on 08 Feb 2022 – 05:45 AM is the Auspicious time for doing Arka Patra Snanam “DISTRICT LEAF”[JILLEDU].

Significance of Ratha Sapthami:

According to HINDU DHARMA, RATHA SAPTHAMI denotes the journey of LORD SURYA from “DAKSHINAYANAM” to “UTTARAYANAM”, i.e., from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere in his chariot (RATHA). It also indicates the beginning of the harvest season. According to HINDU PURANAS, LORD SURYA showers devotees with “health”, and “longevity” .So offering prayers and worshipping LORD SUN on this particular occasion not only promotes health but also helps to get rid of all sins and helps to attain Salvation.

Rituals To Be Performed on Ratha Sapthami:

On this day devotees have to take bath in the early morning before sunrise and according to shastra taking bath with “DISTRICT LEAF”[JILLEDU] , is considered auspicious as this district leaf [arka patram] is considered as the resemblance of LORD SURYA, and promotes health.

After taking bath, devotees should worship Lord Surya Narayana Swamy and should offer Arghya (A Holy Water) in the form of respect. After offering Arghya, pure cow’s milk is taken in a mud bowl and boiled in front of Lord Surya Narayana Swamy and once it’s boiled it is used to make sweet which is considered an auspicious ritual of the day and offer that as Prasadam.
