Parshurama Jayanthi is the birth anniversary of Lord Parshurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The meaning of Parshurama is Rama with Parshu, an axe. According to Puranas, he came down to earth to save people from the evil deeds of Kshatriyas. Tretayuga also began on this day. As per the Hindu calendar, Parshurama Jayanthi falls in the Vaishakha Masam on the third day of Shukla Paksham. Parshurama was the fifth son of Jamdagni and Renuka. Parshurama was a big devotee to Lord Shiva. He had immense knowledge and a great warrior. Parshurama Jayanti is celebrated all over India. Originally, Parshuram was named Ram. Because of the mystical weapon Parshu which was given to him by Lord Siva, he was known as Parshuram. According to Puranas, he defeated Kshatriyas. He was born to free the world from Kshatriyas’ cruelty.

Significance of Parashurama Jayanthi:

Hindus believe that Parashurama is still alive on the Earth, unlike all other avatars of Lord Vishnu. Therefore, Parashurama is not worshipped like Lord Rama and Krishna. According to the Kalki Puranam, Parashurama will be the guru of Sri Kalki, the tenth and final Avatar of Lord Vishnu.

In Dvapara Yuga, Parshurama was a Brahmin warrior who was a great disciple of Lord Siva. He was the mentor of Dronacharya, Bhishma and Karna. The Parashurama Jayanti holds a very special religious significance. Devotees fast throughout the day and worship Lord Vishnu to seek his blessings.
