As per the Mahabharata, Veda Vyasa is the son of Rishi Parashara and a fisherwoman named Satyavati. One day, she helped Saint Parashara to cross the river Yamuna in her boat. He got enchanted by her beauty and wanted a son from her. Initially, she did not agree telling that her purity would be questioned if others see them.
Parashara created a secret place on a nearby island and a thick blanket of fog. She conceived and gave birth to a son immediately. Rishi Parashara named him Krishna Dvaipayana. Parashara restored Satyavati’s virginity and left with his son. Satyavati kept this secret, not even telling King Shantanu whom she was married to later.

Dvaipayana was given the title ‘Veda Vyasa’ as he mastered the combined Vedic literature and divided it into four parts. The four parts are namely Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda. As per Puranas, Lord Siva is called Adi Guru and he had two disciples Shani and Parashurama. He introduced civilization and religion on earth. This is the story behind the titles Adidev and Adiguru to Lord Siva. He provided seven people with Shani and Parasurama and they began to be called Saptarishis and they distributed knowledge of Lord Siva to the whole world.
