Story and Significance Of Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan translates to a bond of protection in Hindi. The celebration of Rakhi dates back thousands of years, as there are several stories behind the origin of this festival.

As per Puranas, once Lord Krishna got injured by a sharp weapon. At that time Draupadi, the wife of Pandavas had torn off a section of her saree and bandaged Lord Krishna’s finger to keep it from bleeding. In return for this favor, Lord Sri Krishna pledged to protect Draupadi whenever she is in trouble.

Lord Krishna accepted it as ‘Raksha Sutra’ and when the Kauravas attempted to dishonor Draupadi by trying to remove Draupadi’s saree in front of her 5 husbands in a court. With Lord Sri Krishna’s blessings, Draupadi’s saree became endless when Dushasana tried removing her saree. This is how Sri Krishna saved Draupadi like a brother protects a sister.
