Ganga Mahotsav, a five-day annual celebration held in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, along the banks of the sacred Ganga, is organized by the UP Tourism Department’s Mahotsav Samithi. Varanasi, historically known as Kashi (the Sanskrit word “kas” meaning “light”), receives its name from two Ganges tributaries, “Varuna” and “Assi,” which span a necklace-shaped 7 km and have 84 ghats.
