The story behind Varalakshmi Vratham:
Goddess Parvati once asked Lord Shiva to assist her with a ‘Vrat’ that relieves people of their sufferings and mangalya Balam (husband’s long life). Then Lord Shiva explained the Pooja Vidhanam of ‘Varalakshmi Vratam,’ and women who follow this vratam would be joyful and relieved of all financial and health difficulties. Charumati, a devout housewife and devotee of Goddess Lakshmi, is also claimed to have given prayers to the Goddess on a daily basis. Thus, in Charumati’s dream, Goddess Mahalakshmi arrived and instructed her to do the ‘Varalakshmi Vratam.’
Charumati followed Goddess Lakshmi’s directions and conducted this vratham in the same manner. She also invited her neighbours, acquaintances, relatives, and close relatives. As a result, they all took part in this Pooja and blessed Charumati. Slowly, ‘Varalakshmi Vratam’ spread across the country, and it became a standard procedure for all married women to do this Pooja on the second Friday of Sravana Masam.
