As per the Sthala Puranam, Lord Vishnu manifested in Narasimha Swamy form to save his devotee Bhakta Prahlada from his father Hiranyakashipu. After the extermination of Hiranyakashipu, Sri Narasimha Swamy went into the forest of Shimachalam hills, Bhakta Prahlada asked to show Varaha avathara of Vishnu again. At that time, Lord Narasimha Shows Varaha Avathara to his beloved devotee at the place where the Sri Narasimha Swamy temple exists now. Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha temple, Simhachalam is one of the 32 Sri Narasimha Swamy temples in Andhra Pradesh alongside Ahobilam, Antarvedi, Kadiri, Mangalagiri, and others. The Chandanotsavam of Simhachalam Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple is celebrated on May 14, 2021.

Chandanotsavam is an important festival celebrated in this temple. Chandanotsavam is also known as Chandana Yatra. It is celebrated on the day of the Akshaya Tritiya festival. During Chandanotsavam, the Sandalwood paste, Chandanam in Telugu, covering the moola virat throughout the year is removed and the idol will be in nija roopam. Devotees are allowed nija Roopa darsanam of the idol for 12 hours once in the whole year.

Chandanam is applied to the moola virat only four days a year. Those are Akshaya Tritiya and full moon days of the Vaisakha, Jyeshta, and Ashadha Masam in the Hindu calendar. Every time, four manugus of Chandanam or 43.5 kg of chandanam is applied to the moola Virat. The Chandanam that covers the idol is removed early at 4:00 AM. The poojas and abhishekam are completed by 6:00 AM after which the devotees are allowed to nija Roopa darsanam of the deity’s idol.

The evening ritual starts with a number of abhishekam to the moola Virat. The most prominent ones are Chandanabhishekam and Sahasrakalasabhishekam. All the three naivedhyam i.e. Balabhoga, Rajabhoga, and night offerings are served to Sri Varaha Narasimha Swamy at a time to compensate for their omission during the day.
