Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most devoutly celebrated festivals in India. History and Story Behind The Lord Vinayaka’s Birth

The beginning of Ganesha Chaturthi was promoted by the Marathas at the height of their rule. History tells us that the great Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji started celebrating it. There are many legends behind the beginning of the festival of Ganesha. There are many stories about the birth of Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati. The most famous story is as follows.

It was Parvati who gave birth to Ganapati. As if she had created Ganesha from a sandalwood lump when Ishwara was not there and told him to wait at the door while she went to bathe. When she went to take a bath, Lord Ganapati refused to let Shiva come in, and they had a fight. In this fight, Ishwara got angry and cut off Ganapati’s head by slapping Raudravatar.

Then Goddess Parvati, who arrived there, saw this scene and slapped Ugravatara, then she slapped Kali’s avatar and threatened to destroy the universe. This made everyone nervous. Then everyone appealed to God to find a way to quench Kalikadevi’s anger. Then Lord Shiva said to his followers. Search everywhere, and the first thing you see is any mother carelessly leaving her child behind, beheading that child.

Thus when Shiva’s followers were searching, the first thing they saw was a baby elephant sitting on its back behind its mother. He cut it and gave it to Shiva. Seeing this, Goddess Kalika’s anger cooled down. Goddess Parvati was overjoyed. Then all the gods blessed Ganesha. That day started to be celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi. Preparations for Ritual Ganesha Chaturthi start a month in advance. This festival lasts for about ten days (from Bhadrapada Shuddha Chaturthi to Ananta Chaturdashi). On the first day, clay idols of Lord Ganesha are installed in homes. Houses are decorated with flowers. A huge number of devotees offer prayers in the temples. Pujas and bhajans are going on continuously.

Also, during the festival, all the family members come together. Local organizations put up pedals and keep huge idols of Lord Ganesha. Along with the Ganapati festival, cultural programs are held on a grand scale in these pedals. On the last day, an idol of Lord Ganesha is paraded through the main streets of the area. People also enthusiastically participate in it by dancing and singing. Finally, Ganapati is immersed in a nearby lake, river, or sea. Thus on this day devotees offer their joy and prayers to Ganapati.
