Ratha Sapthami’s Significance and Importance

Ratha Sapthami is a highly fortunate day that also represents the changing of the season to spring and the beginning of harvests. Saturday, January 28, 2023, is the date of Ratha Saptami in 2023. It is a significant day for Indian farmers, and the festival is observed by all Hindus at their homes and temples dedicated to the God Surya.

Ratha Sapthami signifies the sun deity Surya is turning his chariot drawn by seven horses in the northeast direction towards the northern hemisphere. The Ratha and the seven horses (called Jaya, Ajaya, Vijaya, Jitha Prana, Jitha Krama, Manojapa, and Jitha Krodha) represent the seven colors of the rainbow.

Seven horses signify the seven days of the week, beginning on Sunday (Day of God Surya). The chariot features 12 wheels, which represent the 12 zodiac signs that make up a whole year, known as “Samvatsara.” It is said that worshipping Lord Surya Dev and fasting on this day will cleanse the seven sorts of sins committed “knowingly,” “unknowingly,” “by words,” “by mind,” “by the body,” and “sins committed in previous lives.”

  • The beginning of this worship on Ratha Saptami begins with body cleaning by bathing during the Arunodaya. The Arunodaya lasts till four Ghatis, which is around one and a half hours.
  • Arunodaya bathing before sunrise is claimed to keep the body and mind free of ailments and disorders. One of the reasons Ratha Saptami is also known as Arogya Saptami.
  • Taking Ratha Saptami Snan in a clean water body such as flowing river waters or that of a canal is preferable than bathing in one’s own bathroom.
  • After cleansing the body with a bath at Arunodaya on Ratha Saptami Day, the next practise is to worship Surya God.
  • Offerings of Arghyadan are made to Lord Surya using a small pot called Kalash and gradually offering water from it.
  • Adideva with folded hands/namaskar stance is performed while standing and facing the sun.
  • Puja rites include lighting the traditional lamp and making offerings of camphor, incense sticks, and flowers.
  • Thus, Ratha Saptami Day, also known as Achala Saptami, provides deliverance from one’s sins and directs one toward a better life via pure devotion, worship, and Puja.
