Tirumala – Importance of Kalyana katta:
The word “TIRUPATI” immediately conjures up images of tonsuring and laddus. Thousands of worshippers make an offering of their hair to Lord Sri Malayappa at the KalyanaKatta, a multi-story structure in Tirumala located just across from the Free Meals building. Many hundreds of pilgrims can get their heads shaved at once at Tirumala’s KalyanaKatta, and it’s all done for free. In Tirumala, it is customary for pilgrims to give their hair as an offering before receiving Darshan.

Notable features of Kalyanakatta:
- There are free tonsuring services available in the whole of Kalyanakatta.
- Antiseptics are applied to the head in a watery solution before a tonsillectomy. It prevents the spread of disease to the skin and the rest of the body.
- Pilgrims with shaved heads had geysers installed in restrooms so they can wash their hair in hot water.
- Computer-generated tokens are delivered to the pilgrims for tonsure.
