History of Sri Mahakaleshwar Temple 

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is Situated at Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Among all 12 jyotirlingas, it is only jyotirlinga that faces towards the south. According to a legend. A demon named ‘Dushana’ used to live in the hills of ‘Ratnamala’.he used to harm the devotees that worshiped lord shiva in ‘Avanti’(now Ujjain). He and his family were devoted to lord shiva. They started attacking the city and reached the home of the man. when Dushana was about to Strike the shilling with his weapon, lord shiva appeared there in the form of Mahakala. He defeated the demon and turned him and his army down, into the ashes. The family requested Mahakal to reside in the city of Ujjain so that the city will remain in peace and gain prosperity

From that day, lord shiva resides at Ujjain in the formed Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga the festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated with great enthusiasm at the temple

Ujjain Mahakaleshwar Darshan Timings and Live Updates

The temple opens at 4 am and ends at 11 pm. While during this period the temple follows different rituals. Devotees can participate which they like to perform in various rituals. Every day aarti will be in the morning, midday and evening.  Mahakaleshwar temple and other temples don’t have any break or lunch every afternoon the temples are closed.

  • DARSHAN  – 4:00 AM To 11:00 PM
  • Bhashma – Aarti 4:00 AM To 6:00 AM
  • Morning Aarti – 7:00 AM To 7:30 AM
  • Evening Aarti –  5:00 PM To 5:30 PM
  • Shree Mahakaal Aarti – 7:00 PM To 7:30 PM
