Vaishno Devi Temple History And Significance

It is impossible to pinpoint precisely when the pilgrimage to this sacred shrine first began, as is the case with the majority of historical shrines. According to the findings of a geological investigation of this sacred cave, its age is close to one million years. The sacred cave is mentioned for the very first time in the Indian epic known as the Mahabharata.

It was at the time when the Pandavas and the Kauravas were confronting each other on the battlefield of Kurukshetra; on the instruction of Shri Krishna, Arjun meditated there to seek blessings for victory and ensure that the Pandavas would emerge victorious.

At this point, Arjun addresses the mother goddess by saying “Jambookatak Chityaishu Nityam Sannihitalaye,” which translates to “you who always dwell in the temple on the slope of the mountain in Jamboo.” It is thought that Arjun was referring to the city of Jammu, which is its modern-day equivalent.

It is also claimed that the Pandavas were the first people to construct the Kol Kandoli Temple and the main Bhawan as an expression of their appreciation to the Mother Goddess. It’s possible that Guru Gobind Singh, who is claimed to have been there through Purmandal, made a mention of this Holy Cave in one of his writings.

The first step on the path to reach this Holy Shrine is to answer the Call of Mata. It is not only a belief, but also the profound experience of a great number of pilgrims, that the Maa Vaishnavi sends a call to her children, and that upon getting such a call, they are compelled to visit the Shrine no matter where they may be. This is not just a belief, but also a powerful experience. It is also thought that no one may enter the Shrine until there is a call or “Bulawa” for them to do so.
