Devi Navaratri Utsavalu starts when Durgamma’s parents, who work for the police, give her a sari to wear. The police are involved in the celebrations for Devi Navaratri. Legend has it that when the Kondaveeti Reddy Kings were in charge, Durgamma showed up in the dream of a soldier named Mangayya and told him to dig Her out. The idol of Durgamma was dug up and put under the peepal tree, just as Ammavari said to do. Since then, it has been the norm for police officers to take part in the Devi Navaratri Utsavalu.
