Why Yama Deepam Is Important:

A story says that Hima was the 16-year-old son of a King. His horoscope said that he would die from a snake bite on the fourth night after he got married. And when his bride heard about the prophecy, she decided to trick Lord Yama by lighting lamps outside her home’s main entrance and decorating the area with gold coins and jewelry. When Lord Yama showed up in the form of a snake, he was mesmerized by the lights and jewelry that sparkled. For Lord Yama’s mission to fail, even more, the young bride told her husband stories to keep him from falling asleep. So, she was able to stop Lord Yama from coming into the house by keeping him busy admiring the beauty of the lamps. And by doing that, she changed the course of her husband’s life.

So, on this day, people who follow the religion light lamps at the front door of their homes to protect their families from danger. In this way, they bow down to Lord Yama.
