Chitra pournami is a popular Tamil Hindu festival observed on full moon day in the month of chithirai(Chaitra).chitra pournami is the day for worshiping Chitragupta and it is an important event for women.

This festival is dedicated to Chitragupta, Chitragupta was originally born to the goddess Parvati in the form of chithira or painting. Later he entered the womb of gomatha Kamdhenu and was born on the day of pournami and got the name Chitragupta. He was the assistant of Yama Dharma, the god of death, in accounting for the bad and good activities of people. On the festival day, many devotees ask Chitragupta to remove their sins and make them healthy and happy. Which will deliver greater pleasure to the entire own circle of relatives all 12 months round.

2023 Chitra Pournami Date and Time Festival Pooja Procedure

This year we celebrate Chaitra pournami on 05 May 2023, Friday. On that day many devotees bathe in rivers or other water bodies to symbolize their sins may be washed away. This is especially popular at the river Chitra in the  Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, India.

• Purnima tithi ends: 00:25 AM on 06 May 2023

The custom was to worship him with chakkarai Pongal and other delicacies and sweets without salt. Which will give more happiness to the whole family throughout the year. Devotees should avoid consuming milk and milk products on that day. After finishing the usual pooja and rituals the devotees have to donate rice, and vegetables, dashing in a muram and dhal.  Some people will draw a kolam at the entrance and leave the southside alone empty. after completion of pooja rituals, the kolam will be wiped immediately.
