The Sanskrit terms “Uttara” and “Ayana” which respectively denote “North” and “Moving,” are combined to form the word “Uttarayan.” Consequently, the term “Uttarayan” refers to the motion of the earth toward itself on the celestial sphere. The day after the winter in January, this process begins, and it lasts through the summer months of June. Calculations show that the transit of the Sun from Gemini into Capricorn is known as Uttarayan. The Sun’s transition from Cancer to Sagittarius following this is known as the Dakshinayan.

On January 14, Uttarayan officially begins. The Sun moves into the Capricorn sign on this day. Because of this, today is recognized as Makar Sankranti. This holiday is known as Uttarayan in the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra. In the southern Indian states, this holiday is known as Pongal. It is believed that today will be highly fruitful. According to legend, the day of Uttarayan is the day of God, making the start of any new task, yajna, vow, marriage, etc., exceedingly fortunate. This day is observed as the Kite Playing Festival in Gujarat.

2023 Makar Sankranti Uttarayana Punya Kalam Tharpanam Tithi

• On January 15, 2023, is the Uttarayana Punya Kalam. Considering that it is a normal date and unrelated to the Panchangam, the date of the Uttarayan Punya kalam won’t fluctuate very much.
• The Uttarayan Punya kalam starts at 7:15 in the morning. The optimum time to perform the Tharpanam on the day of Uttarayana Punya Kalam is now.
• In order to do the Tharpanam on the Uttarayan Punya kalam, the pilgrims must pay a priest. Any river or temple nearby can be used for it.
• In most cases, the pooja will be performed at the above-mentioned tithi and muhurtham. The sun’s transition from a south to northward travel also occurs on this day.

• According to Lord Krishna, the six-month period of Uttarayan is the most auspicious since it has the most light. If someone passes away during this time, they will achieve moksha and be rejuvenated.
• Bhishma Pitamah received euthanasia during the Mahabharat era. Additionally, on the day of Makar Sankranti, his soul left his body.
• Only on this auspicious day did Goddess Ganga visit Earth and bless Bhagirath’s lineage. Bathing in the Ganga on Uttarayan has religious significance because of this.
