Celebrations of Ayudha Puja in various states:

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the celebration is known as Ayudha Pooja, in Tamil Nadu as Ayudha Pujai, and in Kerala as Ayudha Puja. In Karnataka, it is celebrated on the ninth day of Dussehra. During Navratri, it usually falls on Maha Navami. Shastra Puja and Astra Puja are other names for Ayudha Puja.

Ayudha Pooja’s Background:

It is the day to express gratitude for all types of tools that are a part of our daily lives. On the day of the celebration, minor items such as spanners, scissors, and pins are worshipped, as are larger items such as automobiles and machinery. People also revere Saraswati, the Goddess of Wisdom, Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth, and Parvati, also known as the Divine Mother. People believe that doing Ayudha Pooja and worshipping the instruments will bring them success. Ayudha Puja commemorates the triumph of good over evil.

Traditions of Ayudha Pooja:

  • Ayudha Puja was originally intended to worship swords, but in its current form, all types of instruments are worshipped on the same day. It is a day when all craftsmen in South India worship their instruments and tools, similar to Vishwakarma Puja in other parts of India.
  • Ayudha Puja has evolved into Vahana Puja, in which individuals worship their vehicles such as cars, scooters, and motorcycles. During Vahana Puja, all cars are decked with vermilion, garlands, mango leaves, and banana saplings and worshipped. During Vahana Puja, a white pumpkin is painted with vermilion and turmeric and crushed in front of the vehicle as a custom to drive away all ills.
  • People wash their instruments, tools, and automobiles before worshipping them. Businessmen clean their establishments and perform a pooja. Shops will be closed following the puja. Ayudha Puja is a special day for worshipping office and school books, among other things.
