It is said that Lord Rama worshipped Shiva in Sri ramanathaswamy Temple. Lord Vishnu’s incarnate Rama prayed to Lord Shiva upon his return after vanquishing the monster Ravana. The demon king Ravana, who kidnapped the goddess Sita, pretended to be a Brahmin. Knowing that Lord Rama had to slay him to stop his cruelty and save the Goddess, he tried to make amends by worshipping Lord Shiva.

Lord Rama requested Hanuman retrieve a lingam from the Mountains so that he might use it as a worship offering. When Hanuman was late getting back with the lingam, Lady Sita fashioned one herself. At the appointed opportune time, Lord Rama offered homage to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased and granted Lord Rama’s wish, appearing to him in the lingam. They have faith that the identical lingam currently resides in the holiest part of the temple.

Once upon a time, a little town named Ramanathaswamy (Shiva) in the lingam form is the main deity worshipped in the temple. There are two lingams within the sanctum: Ramalingam, the primary deity’s sand-based counterpart, and Vishwalingam, which Hanuman brought from Kailash. Even now, people follow Rama’s order to worship the Vishwalingam first since Hanuman brought it.

The temple grounds are surrounded by a high compound wall (madil) on all four sides, with massive towers (Gopurams) to the east and west and completed gate towers to the north and south. This is typical of ancient temples in South India. Impressive long halls stretch throughout the temple’s interior, separated by massive colonnades on platforms over five feet high. The second passageway’s walls, ceiling, and pillars are all made of sandstone.

During the Vasanthotsavam (Spring festival) and on the 6th-day festival in Adi (July-August) and Masi (February-March) conducted by the Setupati of Ramnad, the Utsava deities are adorned and kept in a special structure in the shape of a chess board, known as the Chokkattan Madapam.
