History of Bhadrachalam temple:

Sri Sita Rama Chandra Swamy temple is located on the bank of the river Godavari. Bhadrachalam is located in kothagudem district in Telangana state. The Moola Virat which is swayambhu was discovered by a tribal lady named Pokala Dhammakka in Badrareddypalem in the 17th century. One day she had a dream where Lord Rama appeared and told her about the idol on the peal of Bhadra hill. She found the idols and built a small temple like mandapam for the Moola Virat. Bhadrachalam temple was built by Kancharla Gopanna, the then tahsildar of Bhadrachalam, through donations from people.  Bhadrachalam is the only place in India where Lord Rama appears with four hands. Bhadrachalam is very famous for Vaikunta ekadasi, Vijaya Dasami, Sri Rama Navami brahmotsavam which is held annually. Bhadrachalam is also known as bhadragiri. It is named after Bhadra the child of Meru and Menaka. Bhadeachalam is considered as Dakshina Ayodhya. In Tretha yuga, this place is a dandakaranya forest when Lord Rama visited this place with Sita and Lakshmana during vanavasam. They built a small ashramam in this area at a distance of 30 km from a place called Chitrakoota, as suggested by Sage Agasthya. This is the place where Ravana kidnapped Sita Devi to Lanka.

According to Ramayana, an old female devotee of Sri Rama named Sabari used to wait for Rama’s arrival and offered him fruits after tasting them herself first. Then she took the form of a river. Evidently, the Sabari river flows from here and joins the river Godavari.
