The most important holiday dedicated to Lord Murugan is Skanda Sashti or Kanda Sashti, which is mostly honored by Tamil Hindus. Skanda Sashti is celebrated on the sixth day of Karthika Masam and is usually defined by the lunar month.

Devotees of Lord Murugan fast for six days during Kanda Sashti, which begins on the first day or Pirathamai of the Karthika lunar month and ends on the sixth day, known as Soorasamharam day. The most important day of the 06 days celebration is Soorasamharam. Lord Murugan conquered Demon Surapadman on this day, and so Soorasamharam is celebrated every year to commemorate the triumph of good over evil.

It is worth noting that the Soorasamharam day is determined as the day when Shasti Tithi coincides with Panjami Tithi. As a result, if Shasti Tithi begins before sundown on Panjami Tithi, most temples observe Kanda Sashti.

At the Tiruchendur Murugan temple, the six-day Skanda Sashti Viratham and Soorasamharam festival is very important. On October 26, 2022, the annual Tiruchendur Skanda Sashti Viratham and Soorasamharam festival will commence. The date of Soorasamharam is October 30, 2022. The festival culminates on October 31, 2022, with Thirukalyanam.
