Irumudi Kattu translates to “two bundles.” The front bag is for Lord Iyappan; it holds the ghee coconut (Nei thengai) and all of the pooja things required when we get to Sabari mala. The rear pouch has everything we’ll need on the road for us. The front pouch cannot be opened until we get to Sabarimala; however, the rear pouch can be opened along the trip. The ghee coconut is the most significant component brought in the irumudi kattu (Nei thengai). The ghee coconut represents the devotee holding the irumudi.

According to legend, the coconut represents the body and the ghee represents the soul. You bring yourself to be presented to Iyappan and return what it provides you. That is why you serve ghee to Iyappan Abishekam and throw the empty coconut into the blazing fire. You can transport your own coconut as well as those from your family. During the Irumudi kattu, they must fill the coconut.

  1. On pilgrimage day, the kettunira ritual is done. It is commonly conducted in one’s own home or at a nearby temple.
  2. Take a small or medium-sized ripe coconut. The shell needs to be polished. Cut a hole in one of the coconut’s eyes.
  3. Set it aside to dry after draining the water. (This should be done a few hours before the kettunira ritual.)
  4. After worshiping Lord Ganesha and Ayyappa, it’s time to fill the mudra’ coconut with ghee.
  5. This coconut is the main offering to Lord Ayyappa. This may be accomplished by repeating ‘Swami Saranam’ when visiting the temple.
  6. When the coconut has been completely filled with fresh ghee, the entrance is corked and sealed with wax or another sealant.
  7. Filling the Bag’s Front Portion Rice is picked up with both hands and placed in the Irumudi’s front compartment.
  8. This is done three times. Some adherents mix the first rice with a betel leaf.
  9. Rice can also be filled in the front portion by family members. The ghee-filled coconut is then put on top of the rice in the front compartment.
  10. Coins, money, betel leaves, and areca nuts are placed on top of the rice.
  11. Other puja objects wrapped separately and placed in the compartment include camphor, incense sticks, rose water, jaggery, sandal paste, and vibhuti.

  14. When full, the Irumudi represents the deity and is reverently held rather than left on the ground. It is typically placed on a sheet or rug.
